Star Sequin Pillow Card Tutorial

Star Sequin Pillow Shaker

It’s a fairly simple card with a fun and elaborately shaped sequin shaker component. I’m going to show you how easy it is to make a sequin pocket in any shape you want!

You will need:

-Silhouette cutting machine and sketch pens (optional)
-printer paper
-transparency (I used a page protector cut in half)
-temporary adhesive
-sewing machine and thread
-sequins
-glitter/glitter glue (optional)

First start with a shape. I chose a star, but you can do any shape you want. Open the shape you want in Silhouette Studio and size it to be slightly smaller than you want the final shape to be. Use a sketch pen to draw it on printer paper. (Alternatively if you don’t have sketch pens or a Silhouette, you can just draw your shape by hand…. or print one out… but it’s more fun this way ;)

1

Apply a layer of temporary adhesive, not too close to your template!

2

Place the first layer of transparency on top and then apply another layer of temporary adhesive in the same place.

3

Place sequins in the center. You can also add glitter but that can get messy. Place the second layer of transparency on top of the sequins.

4

You should now have a sandwich that goes paper-adhesive-transparency-adhesive+sequins-transparency.

Stitch with your sewing machine using the drawn lines as a guide. Go slow and use the hand crank often, especially to get around corners. Make sure you have long tails on both ends for tying. Use your nails to push any wayward sequins into the middle.

5

Pull the thread through to the back and tie securely. Trim the excess.

6

Gently start ripping the paper off the back.

7

This is why we used temp adhesive and printer paper! Peel off the inside and anything stuck under the thread.

8

Trim around the shape, giving yourself about 1/8th of an inch of space beside the thread. Round the corners so it’s not sharp.

9

Isn’t it cute!?

Now you can use regular glue or glitter glue to attach it to your card. I used glitter glue, which is why my card is a bit warped… oops!

Like I said before, you can do this with any semi-elaborate shape (heart, flower, hexagon, crescent, etc), you are only limited by your sewing machine skills. This technique can be used to sew custom shapes into your project life page protectors as well.

What kind of shape can you come up with for a sequin pocket?

xoxo
