Hyde Park ARTastic DT Scrapbook Layout

The gorgeous inspiration painting for this month at ARTastic is Pink Roses by Chris Hobel.

pink-roses-by-chris-hobel

I love roses and I love the grey and blue with the pink, wand a few hints of green. The challenge was to use pink. My love of roses and the challenge inspired me to scrap photos of the Queen’s rose garden in Hyde Park in London. I love visiting rose gardens in whatever city I’m travelling to. I was also super pumped to finally use this gorgeous greyscale rose paper. I got it at the dollar store, and I’ve had it for a long time. This was the perfect layout for it and I was super excited to use it.

img_4713

I had a vague idea about what I wanted the layout to look like- a square of photos in the middle, layered over some scraps of paper that were tiled but not touching, over top of some mixed media. I applied white gesso to the background for the mixed media and almost cried cause I thought I ruined my beautiful paper. But as it dried and I played with my papers I realized I could still clearly see the roses around the edges and the white would really make my mixed media stand out and not soak into the paper (which was really thin), and I was going to cover most of it up with papers and embellishments anyway. It also became slightly more translucent as it dried. I then applied pink and blue watercolours with packaging and splatters, as well as gold splatters, and I was quite a bit happier with the result.

img_4715

I went through all of my paper stash and pulled a bunch of rose patterned papers. I cut one or two rectangles of each and arranged them over my mixed media. I then stitched them down, because they would not stick to the mixed media otherwise. Under my photos, I have layered a blue rose paper (dollar store too, and Cute Girl) and some pink and white tissue paper.

img_4714

I wanted the majority of my embellishments to be pink and gold. I pulled from a bunch of different collections for it- Cute Girl and Bloom (Crate Paper); Atlas and Take Me Away (Pink Paislee).

img_4712

I also used C’est la vie from Pink Paislee- the acetate pieces and gold embossed embellies are gorgeous and perfect for this layout.

img_4711

I wish the photos could capture just how lovely that garden was. I also wish I had gotten a better picture of those super fat London pigeons!

img_4710

For my title I used the pinkest letters from the Bloom Petals thickers pack and the rose gold mini alphas from MME’s Metallic Necessities. Final touches included pink enamel dots, sequins, a date stamp (Dear Lizzy), a punched gold butterfly, a wood veneer heart, and that gorgeous enamel rose that a scrappy friend gave me.

I took a very literal approach to the inspiration painting. But there’s so many things you can do with it. I’d love to see what you come up with! Hop on over the ARTastic blog to see what approach the rest of the team has used and link up your own!

I had a lot of fun making this layout for the Stick It Down team. Of course I had to do something different and to me, the sketch was begging to flipped, rotated and squished for my purposes. This was the original sketch:

stickitdown-october-sketch

Which is lovely, but this is the monster I turned it into:

sketch-flipped

My reasoning was first to squish to fit on an 8.5×11 layout. Because I liked that lovely open space in the middle and it got lost when squishing horizontally, I rotated it. And left to right diagonal just flowed better to me.

For the flowers, I was inspired by the Cute Girl collection painted watercolour style roses that come in the chipboard sheet and ephemera pack… the only problem was there was only one of each! So I got a piece of scrap gessoed cardstock and my watercolours and painted a bunch more in that style! And I ended up not using the original ones because they were just randomly different.

I also splattered gold paint on them when I was doing my background splattering. The Pink Paislee C’est La Vie collection went really well with this part of the Cute Girl collection, so I used that ampersand from the ephemera pack as well as a tab that says fabulous. The acrylic heart (and arrow) are MME’s Yes, Please. That plus is from the same alphas that I used for the title- Maggie Holme’s Bloom Petals.

For the circular element of the sketch I wanted to use doilies but I didn’t have any white ones. Guess what I used? That’s right, my Silhouette. I designed a doily cut file, and I cut it out in two different sizes from white cardstock, and I cut them in half and placed them where I wanted them. I then stitched all around the page to give it a little border like in the sketch.

I played around quite a bit with the placement of my photos. Because I had so many other things going on, I ended up layering the bottom photo under the doily because otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see it at all. I also layered a bunch of Cut Girl papers under the photo, as well as some tissue paper. I fussy cut that border from another sheet from Cute Girl. Tangled pink thread added that final touch.

1d2fd32be5d1fbd1-photo

I did use the chipboard frame and arrow from the Cute Girl chipboard sticker sheet. I also really wanted to add some gold/white thread to those roses but the paint smudged under my sewing machine foot and got on the white thread and it wasn’t pretty. That’s why I used the paint instead, but I’m pretty happy with the final look!

Why don’t you give this sketch a try- either as is, or flipped/rotated/squished to your hearts content! If you do, don’t forget to submit it to the Stick It Down challenge link-up.

Nothing says ‘I love you’ like a head boop – ARTastic DT Scrapbook Layout

I love you scrapbook layout

This month at ARTastic we had this fantastic painting by Donald James Waters called Spot On. The challenge was to commemorate a father. I was thinking of doing a layout about my dad, but the sweet cotton candy colours, and the pet in the painting made me want to scrap this super sweet picture of my husband and our baby instead. donald-james-waters-spot-on

It doesn’t help that I got a huge shipment of new scrapbook supplies from Scrapbook.com which included quite a bit of the Sweet Girl collection from Crate Paper, which makes me want to scrap pictures of my cat… and the colours go with the painting perfectly.

Lovely Ladies SID DT Scrapbook layout

Lovely Ladies Scrapbook Layout

I had a lot of fun with the sketch for September at Stick It Down. I decided to squish it a little to fit on 8.5×11, but other than that, I stuck pretty true to the design.

sept 16 single

The one thing that I definitely knew I wanted to do with this layout was the fold-over to reveal pattern paper bit. I’ve been wanting to try that for quite a while and this was the perfect sketch for it. I was so eager in fact that folding over and stapling the paper was the first thing I did! Which made things a little harder for the rest of the layout, but I worked around it.

IMG_4386

For the pattern paper peaking out behind the fold, I used Crate Paper’s Maggie Holmes Sweet Story Paper. I used some clear and gold swirl cellophane wrap as a overlay. I think it adds a lot of interest to the paper! I used the other side of the paper as a layer behind the photos.

IMG_4383

I even used the branding strip for layering! I also have white cardstock matting and white tissue paper under there. I love how the tissue paper gives the photos an airy lift.

For the background, I covered the areas I was going to do mixed media on with gesso, then applied grapefruit pink shimmer spray with the packaging technique. I also splattered several shades of pink, red, orange and gold watercolour around the page. Once dried, I placed several clear gold frame stickers from the dollar store, then layered a flower cut out that I had designed and cut with my Silhouette. Lastly I used gold paint to stamp butterflies around the page.

IMG_4387

I used a lot of my Scraptastic club kit on this layout! It has certainly got a lot of mileage! It came with these gorgeous exclusive wood veneers that I have been hoarding. I used the grapefruit shimmer spray and gold paint to colour them.

IMG_4388

I layered some pink thread underneath them. I embellished with these gorgeous pink pearl dots that were a gift from my aunt, as well as some puffy heart stickers.

IMG_4394

For the corner cluster, I layered some washi tape and a pink ticket under the third flower wood veneer.

IMG_4395

I used Dear Lizzy Treasure thickers for part of the title. The other part, I used American Crafts Peach cardstock and some gold embossing powder to make these DIY mini alphas. I absolutely adore how they turned out and will definitely be using this technique again! I stamped the letters quite far apart, embossed, and then cut them out. It was super easy.

I’d love to see what you come up with for this sketch! Remember to link up on the Stick It Down blog!

Paws – ARTastic DT Scrapbook Layout

Paws Cat Scrapbook Layout

And here’s another layout, inspired by Paige Evans. I used her geometric cat cut file for this layout. I was also inspired by this gorgeous work of art by Thea Proctor called The Swing:

Thea Proctor - The Swing

This was the inspiration piece for the ARTastic blog and the challenge was to use black pen on your page. I was taken by the bright colours and the striking black outlines. And of course I thought it was the perfect opportunity to use a sketch pen in my Silhouette.

This is Adorable SID DT Scrapbook Layout

IMG_4149

Isn’t it though? I absolutely adore how this turned out! The Stick It Down sketch for this month is:

august 2016

I was looking for techniques to try on my scrapbook Pinterest board, and I came across a recent Paige Evans layout that I just had to scraplift, and it went with the sketch perfectly. Her’s was a robin’s egg blue cardstock background with the word Wanderlust as the title. I didn’t want to copy it, just lift it, so I decided to use a different word. I picked Adorable because it’s a good length and I had some adorable Qi pictures that I wanted to scrap.

Birthday Card

IMG_4146

It’s been a little while since I’ve posted a card… since I’ve made a card even! So of course I went a little overboard on this one. But I love how it turned out! As you can tell, it’s for my friend Jennica. We are dance partners and we did a mermaid routine together, so I thought another mermaid card would be fun. I didn’t want it to be exactly like my other one though.

Piggin Out – ARTastic DT Scrapbook Layout

Piggin Out Scrapbook Layout

This month’s challenge and inspiration at the ARTastic challenge blog was completely out of my comfort zone- a rural theme and muted colours including brown. The painting is Spring Frost Study by Elioth Gruner:

Elioth Gruner - Spring Frost Study

I am so not a country girl. If you look closely at the pics in this layout, you can see that I’m wearing heels- in a pig pen! I had also gotten a couple sets of those chipboard pennants and buttons from my aunt in Russia, that went perfectly with this theme, so I knew I wanted to use them somehow. I also used the splotchy cows as an excuse to use mixed media and make a lot of splotches. So I started out by applying gesso to the bottom of my page. I wanted a lot of horizontal elements in my layout, inspired by the fences and the cows being all in a row.  I used watercolours- regular as well as metallic liquid ones in bronze and copper and gold to make a lot of splotches all over the page. I also used the packaging technique to create a muddy “pig pen” to go behind my photo. I used brown watercolours, and layered other colours and metallics over it. I then used my sewing machine to sew messy wavy lines across the page going all the way up.

IMG_4093

I wanted this layout to stay true to me and my style, so I added purple and pink and blue, as well as adding those fussy cut roses and butterflies for a pretty, girly touch. Keeping this on white cardstock to make it airy and bright also helped keep it “me”.

IMG_4097

So I had recently bought these tiny cloth-pins and I had this idea to make a line of pennants between two cloth-pins. I cut a couple lengths of twine (I considered doing three lines, but it looked too busy, much better with two). My cat helped with this part- stringing the pennants on the twine. The packs of chipboard pennants also contained real and chipboard buttons, as well as big wooden buttons, so I scattered a bunch of those all over the page.

IMG_4096

I used embroidery floss to tie a couple of bows in some of the buttons, and thread to nest under other buttons. I also used a bunch of buttons from my stash.

IMG_4094

After I had everything the way I liked it, I glued it all down. The final finishing touch was taking gold liquid watercolour and spreading it over some of the chipboard pieces and buttons as an accent.

IMG_4092

I also had a difficult time coming up with the title. At first I was thinking of doing something long and using lots of different alphas, but once everything else was on the page, it felt like too much. I wanted to keep it short and sweet and small. And it also -had- to involve a pig pun. So I used some of my MME Necessities Wood mini alphas, as well as a couple word stickers that came in that set. They are so versatile and they go with everything! What I can’t believe is that I didn’t use my Silhouette on this project. I had this idea to make custom mini alphas, but since deciding on a shorter title, I didn’t end up making any. Well, it’s a project for another time.

Hope you are inspired to step out of your comfort zone, and take something you wouldn’t normally do and make it “you”. If you do a rural theme, don’t forget to link up over at ARTastic for a chance to win one of three prize packs!

Love in San Sebastian – SID DT scrapbook layout

IMG_4036

I’m pleased to say that I will sticking it down with the SID challenge blog’s single page team for another term! This month I’m the featured designer at Stick It Down. Our sketch this month is:

july 2016 single page

I followed this sketch pretty closely. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it at first, and then browsing through my photos I found my set of San Sebastian photos, of which I had 4 little square photos and 2 big ones. Once I got that ball rolling, everything came together quite easily!

Love You Forever Scrapbook Layout ARTastic DT

IMG_3822web

This one was obvious- our inspiration art for the ARTastic challenge this month was a tiger! So I absolutely had to do a layout about my Tiger. The painting is by Anna Collins and its called Top Hat Tiger.

Anna Collins Top Hat Tiger.

The criteria was black and white plus one colour. I chose peach as my colour.

I started with my background. I didn’t have any black and white paper that I really wanted to use and I’ve been inspired by hand painted looking backgrounds anyways. I decided to do stripes on one side and dots on the other. I used black acrylic paint to paint the stripes, and then I though, I still have that stencil  I made with my Silhouette from when I made a cat t-shirt, so I used that instead of dots. I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

IMG_3825

I also just had to fussy cut a couple of cat faces from my sheet of Curious paper. And use those puffy cat stickers from Dollarama. That one came with stars too, which matched perfectly.

For the title, I wanted to use a wood veneer from Michaels, and I wanted to colour it to match. I kinda was going for colouring the bottom half so it says FURever, but I don’t know if that comes  across as much, cause when I started colouring it with orange ink and sponge dauber, I really liked the subtle ombre effect it created and I decided to stick with that.

IMG_3828

The other trendy design element I wanted to include was a border of little rectangular snippets of pattern paper. I pulled all of the peach papers I had in my stash, and cut a little rectangle out of each of them. I also used some of those papers to create layers under my photos.

IMG_3827

I completed the page with a couple of gold splatters, a few enamel dots, and a brad from My Mind’s Eye Cut and Paste. I also used my new date stamp from Dear Lizzy. It’s messy but I’m getting the hang of it. It’s not super important to me to get dates on the pages, I just wanted to use my new stamp.

So go check out the challenge at ARTastic. There are several prize packs to be won.

xoxo
