This month at ARTastic we had this fantastic painting by Donald James Waters called Spot On. The challenge was to commemorate a father. I was thinking of doing a layout about my dad, but the sweet cotton candy colours, and the pet in the painting made me want to scrap this super sweet picture of my husband and our baby instead.
It doesn’t help that I got a huge shipment of new scrapbook supplies from Scrapbook.com which included quite a bit of the Sweet Girl collection from Crate Paper, which makes me want to scrap pictures of my cat… and the colours go with the painting perfectly.
I started with a sheet of grey ombre polka dot paper from Crate Paper’s Flea Market. It had a yellow border which I cut off. I added gesso on the left side where I wanted my title to go. The I added watercolours and some lavender, mint and grapefruit shimmer sprays using the packaging technique as well as splattering. I went through all my alphas and stickers to find all the words that I needed. I wanted every word in the title to be different somehow.
I stitched the first word. Here’s a tip if you don’t have a particular colour of embroidery floss but you have thread- fold the thread in half and then in quarters, then use that instead of floss. It looks pretty much the same, and it gives you more variety of colours!
I used several layers of watercolour on vellum for “says”. I then fussy cut it. I love the look! It’s also fun to make DIY embellies like that- I was inspired by the vellum pieces from Maggie Holmes Open Book, which I’m quickly running out of, so I thought I’d make my own! I might try printing next time though, if I want less texture in my vellum.
LOVE is from the Cute Girl chipboard sticker sheet. You is from Pink Paislee’s Take Me Away foam sticker pack. The I is from Heidi Swapp- mint green acrylic letters. I sound like I’m writing a poem here! I added pink stitching around LOVE to really make it pop.
LIKE is also Heidi Swapp, I added stitching to make it pop too. A is from the Petals chipboard alpha stickers from AC. Head is foam AC thickers. I added a little bit of watercolour on the foam- it wasn’t quite dry yet in the picture. It was an experiment! Lastly, the BOOP jelly alphas are from the dollar store.
I absolutely adore this paper from the 6×6 Cute Girl paper pad. It has words like love, cute, sweet, adorable. It’s perfect for my cat and this photo. I added pink stitching and ruffled it up. The wood veneer cat is from Seven paper. I used him to stick down the acetate hearts from the Cute Girl ephemera pack.
The other thing I got in my shipment was these Carpe Diem chipboard frames from Simple Stories. This one matched the Cute Girl collection perfectly. The rest of the layers under the photo are also Cute Girl from the 6×6 pad.
Since I cut off the border, to make it 12×12 I stuck it onto a sheet of pattern paper from Teresa Collins. I wanted something lighter and more textured for the border. I stitched it together and ruffled the edges.
I love love love this collection and how so many things can match with it. And I think it goes perfectly with the inspiration artwork for this month. What about it inspires you? I’d love to see what you come up with- link up in the ARTastic blog!
