Mom & Me SID Scrapbook Layout

Mom & Me Scrapbook page

This month for the Stick it Down blog, the sketch was this:

Stick it Down may single page

And it seemed pretty basic, until I saw the “any shape” qualifier. I immediately thought of layout I saw recently by Ashley Horton where she fussy cut flowers and made them into an ampersand. I really liked the idea and wanted to scraplift it, but I also wanted to be creative with my own design so I decided to do a heart instead. I wanted to make something special for my mom for mother’s day, so I used a photo of us that I took last mother’s day.

Look at us with our glasses being all cute :). To make this page, first I cut a heart out with my Silhouette to use as a guide to cut a heart from a piece of foam sheet. I cut the heart as a border about half an inch thick. Then I used watercolours to paint flowers and leaves on a piece of white cardstock. I was inspired by Paige Evan’s Fancy Free collection and tried to imitate the flowers with watercolours. I didn’t make quite enough to go all the way around, so I also fussy cut some flowers from a sheet of floral paper from my Flea Market paper pad. The background paper is also Flea Market. When I had my flowers the way I wanted them, I glued, then stitched them to the foam for dimension and attached that to the background, overtop a gold doily.

I added a butterfly from an old Scraptastic Club kit. This area was a little busy, so I decided to move the title to the bottom of the page. With the heart being rather horizontal, that left some space down there perfect for the title.

I layered some washi tapes on a diagonal, added another fussy cut flower from the same paper, and stitched through all that. I used Heidi Swapp acrylic letters, AC foam thickers and Dear Lizzy Treasure thickers to make my title.

Lastly, instead of journaling, I added a vellum piece (Maggie Holmes Open Book) and a Heidi Swapp word sticker over in the bottom left. I painted a bit of baby blue acrylic paint in the corner first to make the vellum pop, using up some of the paint I mixed for the last layout I made (I’m surprised it didn’t dry out!)

I hope this inspired you to think outside the box when it comes to shapes and how to use them as the main design element. Don’t forget to link up your take on this challenge on the Stick It Down blog. You can win a guest design team spot AND there is a huge prize pack in honour of (inter)National Scrapbook Day!!
