So I had the perfect photos for this art inspiration piece for the ARTastic challenge blog. This month we were inspired by John Maitland with Seven Gilrs Running.
To me, they are dancers (it’s all in how you interpret art, right?), and the background colours of blue, purple and red, with pops of black, went perfectly with the costumes we made for our 3 Fates choreography. The criteria was girls only, and of course my dance troupe is all girls.
A little bit more background on the photos- my dance troupe Mascarie did a choreography inspired by the Greek myth about the three sisters, the Fates, one who spins the thread, one who measures it, and one who cuts it. I wanted to reflect all that in my layout. Also, our costume included a lace mask over our eyes. I had a bit of lace left over that I wanted to use on my layout. I started with gessoed piece of white cardstock and I painted red, purple and blue lines with watercolours. I really liked the horizontal aspect of the inspiration piece so I did horizontal lines as my main design element. I then placed lines of polka dot washi tape and stitched those down with gold thread, for texture and really to hold the tape to the gesso.
I really like how this turned out, the three colours peeking through the lace. To represent the measured thread in the mythos, I used gold thread in my sewing machine to stitch a loopy line in the lace. To make in really stand out, I went over it a couple times.
To represent the spinning of the thread, I made a lovely little tangle and anchored it down with the wood heart. The heart indicates that the thread is a symbol for a person’s life. It also represents my love for my troupe ;). So much symbolism here in this layout! I kept the title simple with white foam thickers from American Crafts to let everything else shine.
I layered the photo on some white tulle for an airy feel and Close to my Heart paper, just to separate it a bit from the background. I stitched around the photo to attach it to the tulle and paper. And cause it just looks pretty with all the gold thread.
The scissors are kinda obvious here… cutting the thread. I googled “fancy scissors” and then put the picture into Silhouette Studio and traced it to make this cut file. I cut it from cardstock and embossed it in gold. I did extra embossing on the handles to get that puffy 3D look. I LOVE how they turned out. I wasn’t even sure at first if I wanted to use scissors, but once I cut it and embossed it, I was convinced. I love how I can make literally anything I dream up with my Silhouette.
Lastly, I popped some black enamel dots on there, just because.
