Today’s ARTastic layout is brought to you by Mia Taninaka with Oh The Wise One, a gorgeous owl painted on wood.
Isn’t it gorgeous? The challenge criteria is to use wood veneers. I immediately knew I wanted to use up a bunch of Michaels wooden hearts that I bought a huge bag of, and I wanted to somehow alter them. I also wanted a black and white background with watercolour paint on it. I started with Teresa Collins He Said She Said paper, and I applied gesso. While it dried, I did my wood veneers. I used painters tape to cover half of a bunch of them, and either embossed with gold and black, or painted with gesso then gouache paint.
I love the texture that the embossing gives to these, and they turned out exactly how I pictured, so I was super happy. I splattered paint, stitched a bunch of lines, and arranged the hearts across the top.
I layered a bunch of papers (including one that my dance friend -the one in the bottom right of the photo, gave me for my birthday!) under my photo, keeping my layers tight as it was a big photo. I painted a bunch of paint (same colour that I used on the red hearts) and glued my layers down. I also layered a vellum sentiment from Maggie Holmes Open Book, and a sentiment from MME’s Necessities wood alphas pack.
I also layered embossed black hearts that I cut a long time ago for a card and have been keeping in my scrap box. More wood alphas and a Michaels Shine wood veneer (more gold embossing) make up my title. Finishing touch was a couple of black enamel shapes from Heidi Swapp. I also stitched it (crookedly- on purpose!) onto white cardstock and ruffled the edges for a whimsical look.
I urge you to go check out the ARTastic blog for more inspiration, and to submit your take on the challenge! How could you not be inspired by such gorgeous art?
xoxo
