Love in San Sebastian – SID DT scrapbook layout

I’m pleased to say that I will sticking it down with the SID challenge blog’s single page team for another term! This month I’m the featured designer at Stick It Down. Our sketch this month is:

july 2016 single page

I followed this sketch pretty closely. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it at first, and then browsing through my photos I found my set of San Sebastian photos, of which I had 4 little square photos and 2 big ones. Once I got that ball rolling, everything came together quite easily!

First thing I did was build my background. I just really wanted to use my new gold and mint green washi tapes, so I put down 5 different strips of those. Next, I wanted to bring some coral into the background, so I put down a strip of Teresa Collins He Said She Said graph patterned paper (I pulled up the top strip of washi tape to overlap the paper). Next I put some teal vellum from Crate Paper’s Flea Market down. Unfortunately, I had already cut into the vellum so I didn’t have enough for a 12 inch strip, but I knew I was going to cover it with a photo there, so I left a gap. I lay down some gesso in a blob in the middle of the page, and blended it out with my fingers. I wanted to tone down the patterns a bit in the washi tape and patterned paper, so I used white gesso. Next I used the packaging technique to lay down some colour with watercolours and mint shimmer spray, using my paintbrush to blend in places. I also splattered all over the page. Lastly I added some stitching through the vellum, and the bottom strip of washi.

IMG_4032Since I only had four photos, I needed another element for the bottom row. I searched through my mementos from the trip and found a brochure with with these adorable fish from the aquarium we went to. I just had to use them! And the photos were much better than any I could have taken in the dark aquarium. So I loaded it up onto my Pixscan mat, traced the fish in Studio, offset around them and sent them through my machine. I love how I can create embellishments from anything with the Pixscan mat, it cut things out way more neatly than I can! I stitched through the fish to give them a bit of texture and popped one up on foam.

While looking through my mementos, I also came across a map which featured this photo on the cover. It sparked the idea of making the title over the photo, which was a creative way to sneak another picture into this sketch. I added some chipboard letters from Teresa Collins Save the Date chipboard pack, and alphas from MME’s Necessities in Wood, as well as some stitching.

For the journaling part of the sketch, I made a couple layers of Kaitlin Sheaffer labels that I had print and cut with my Silhouette. I cut a strip with that quote from a Teresa Collins Save the Date cut apart paper and stapled on a little GO banner from Pink Paislee’s Atlas ephemera pack. That geotag is also from Atlas. I used my awesome Dear Lizzy date stamp as well, stamping  couple times before sticking it all together.

The last thing to do was embellish the page. I cut apart that Eat well Travel often banner and wrapped it around one of my photos (which I popped up with foam).

More Save the Date chipboard, Necessities Wood stickers, an Atlas arrow and a stitched through label.  I also added a bit of gold paint with my paintbrush to give it some shimmer.

I was really happy to find a layout to use this boat on. You know how there’s always a few pieces in the ephemera packs that you have no idea what to do with? This was one from MME’s Then and Now Happenings pack. I splattered it with gold paint, stitched through it and stuck it down to be anchored by the strip of vellum. Overall I’m so pleased with how this turned out! I hope this inspired you to create a layout with this sketch, and then submit it to the Stick It Down challenge blog!

xoxo
